This paper consists of a program of individual research and assessment undertaken by the student working under supervision. The supervisor will have agreed to this as part of the process of enrolling for the paper. The research topic will be agreed on in discussion between the student and supervisor.

This paper involves a full programme of independent research, as agreed upon between the individual student and the supervisor. A detailed proposal will be developed, which includes a brief outline of the topic/research question, a brief description of the proposed methodology, and an outline of any relevant ethical issues, as well as any other components required by the individual supervisor. This proposal should also include the structure of the proposed research, along with a timeline for the completion of each specific stage.

Students who successfully complete the paper should be able to:

  • Develop a viable social policy research question/topic.

    Students will develop a research question or topic that can be answered/developed within the relevant time frame using the resources available.

  • Write an appropriately detailed research proposal.
    Students undertaking this paper will develop skills in writing a research proposal that includes a plan for completing the proposed research within the available time frame, taking into account any relevant ethical issues.

  • Identify and review literature relevant to the research topic.
    Students undertaking this paper will develop skills in surveying and reviewing the available social policy literature (and other material, as relevant) related to their research topic, extending their capacity to critically read relevant literature.

  • Present their findings in an appropriate format.
    The structure of assessment for this paper will be developed in discussion with the supervisor. Students will write up their findings in the format decided on, working independently and taking on board feedback and the process.

The assessment requirements for SOCPY390 will be part of the research proposal, and will be developed in conjunction with, and approved by the supervisor. The assessment may comprise one piece of work, or a number of smaller assessments (e.g., book reviews, annotated bibliographies etc). The written work should amount to between 5000 – 6000 words (excluding the reference list).

Workload

This paper is worth 15 points. For a 12-week semester, students are expected to devote 25% of a full-time workload to each paper i.e. 10 hours per week throughout the entire semester. For T and S semesters, this doubles to 20 hours per week. Students are expected to manage their workload to allow for this to be undertaken in a timely fashion.
